21 Baking Tips You Must Know

Hello, hope you had a fantastic week, will you be baking this weekend, if yes and for all time here are some tips I have learnt in the course of interactions with other bakers, reading and some from personal observations. I hope they will help you to produce consistent results:

1) Always ensure your hair is properly covered and your nails are clipped and clean before you start.

2) Always ensure your ingredients are at room temperature ie if you stored your eggs or butter in the fridge bring them out before using it/them.

3) Always use fresh ingredients. Don't store ingredients for too long.

4) Follow the recipe accurately.

5) Ensure you have all the ingredients listed in the recipe before you start.

6) Ensure you always sieve your dry ingredients to remove all lumps and dirt.

7) When creaming butter/margarine and sugar ensure it is light (in color) and fluffy.

8) Whisk your eggs gently before adding to batter.

9) To substitute for buttermilk add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to 1 cup of milk.

10) Always use a liquid measuring cup to measure liquids and dry measuring cup to measure dry ingredients.

11) Don't over mix once you add the dry ingredients - either you use a wooden spoon to fold your dry  ingredients in gently or if your are using a mixture reduce the speed to the lowest.

12) Make sure your baking pans are properly prepared.

13) Never bake with an oven that is not preheated.

14) Position you baking pan in the center of the oven and if you are baking more than one cake at the same time ensure the pans are neither touching each other nor the sides of the oven.

15) Avoid opening the oven too often. When you can smell the cake in the kitchen, you cake is almost done.

16) To test if your cake is ready, leave the pan in the oven and insert a skewer/small knife/toothpick, if it comes out clean, your cake is done.

17) Once you turn off the oven take your cake out to avoid over baking.

18) Allow your cake to cool down briefly, then place it on a wire rack to cool completely.

19) Allow your cake to cool down completely before covering it.

20) Always clean your cake board/cake drum with vinegar or confectioners alcohol before using.

21) Have a little black book the contains the phone numbers of people who help your business i.e. the person that repairs your mixer, the person that helps you refill your gas, the person that answers your questions all all times e.t.c. so that even if you lose your phone you still have their contacts.
